Stop Choosing the Destination First

If you're thinking about your next vacation, I have a suggestion that might surprise you:

Don't start with the destination.

Instead, start with what excites you.

One of the first questions I ask my clients isn't "Where do you want to go?" It's "What do you want to experience?"

Because the truth is, the most memorable trips aren't always about the destination itself. They're about the experiences that make you feel curious, inspired, connected, or simply happy to be there.

Maybe you love history and want to walk through places you've read about for years.

Maybe you're fascinated by food and wine and would enjoy meeting local producers, exploring markets, and learning the stories behind regional specialties.

Perhaps you find yourself drawn to nature and wildlife, eager to spot animals in their natural habitat or spend time surrounded by beautiful scenery.

Or maybe you're simply looking for a slower pace, meaningful experiences, and the opportunity to connect with local culture.

When you start with what interests you most, choosing the destination becomes much easier.

For example, if you love food and wine, Italy, France, Portugal, or Spain may be wonderful options. If wildlife and nature are what excite you, Costa Rica, Alaska, or the Galápagos could be a perfect fit. If history and culture are your passion, destinations like Greece, Germany, or Peru may belong on your list.

I've found that many travelers initially ask about a destination because they saw a beautiful photo, heard about it from a friend, or watched a television show. But after we spend some time talking, they often discover that another destination is actually a better match for the experiences they're hoping to have.

That's why I always encourage my clients to think about what truly interests them before deciding where to go.

As you dream about your next adventure, ask yourself:

  • What topics do I enjoy learning about?

  • What experiences have I enjoyed most on past trips?

  • What activities make me lose track of time?

  • What would make this trip feel meaningful and memorable?

The answers may lead you somewhere you never expected.

And often, that's where the most rewarding journeys begin.
